While the new “balanced” school schedule is certainly controversial there is no doubt some wonderful benefits that can come from this arrangement. First of all, it is important to understand that with this new schedule, the time spent at school is not extended but simply re-arranged to allow for more breaks but a shorter summer break. One of the biggest arguments for the balanced schedule is to eliminate “summer learning loss.” It is easy to see how this would undoubtedly be an issue as I have a hard time remembering something I learned last week, let alone 3 months prior. By eliminating the long 3 months span that a traditional school calendar leaves for summer break you are able to disperse that into smaller breaks throughout the entire year. By giving the students (and teachers for that matter) more days off throughout the school year you are also helping to eliminate burn out. I think we can all vouch that a few days away from anything (work, school, responsibilities) gives a renewed enthusiasm when returning. Below is this years school calendar and I’m hoping this will only continue to assist in an already stellar school system!
